Glaucoma is a group of diseases of the optic nerve involving loss of retinal ganglion cells in a characteristic pattern of optic neuropathy. Although raised intraocular pressure is a significant risk factor for developing glaucoma, there is no set threshold for intraocular pressure that causes glaucoma. One person may develop nerve damage at a relatively low pressure, while another person may have high eye pressure for years and yet never develop damage. Untreated glaucoma leads to permanent damage of the optic nerve and resultant visual field loss, which can progress to blindness.
Glaucoma has been nicknamed the "sneaky thief of sight" because the loss of visual field often occurs gradually over a long time and may only be recognized when it is already quite advanced. Once lost, this damaged visual field can never be recovered.

Types of glaucoma
There are three types of glaucoma.
Open-Angle Glaucoma. In this type of glaucoma, the optic nerve is damaged bit by bit. This slowly leads to loss of eyesight. One eye may be affected more than the other.
Closed-AngleGlaucoma-It is less common. In this type of glaucoma, the colored part of the eye (iris) and the lens block movement of fluid between the chambers of your eye. This causes pressure to build up and the iris to press on the drainage system of the eye.It is often an emergency and you  need medical care right away to prevent permanent damage to your eye.
Congenital Glaucoma is a rare form of glaucoma that some infants have at birth. Some children  and young adults can also get a type of the disease.
Who is at risk for glaucoma?
Your ophthalmologist considers many kinds of information to determine your risk for developing the diseases.
The most important risk factors includes:
 Age.
 Elevated eye pressure.
 Family history of glaucoma.
 African or Spanish ancestry.
 Farsightedness or nearsightedness.
 Past eye injuries.
 Thinner central corneal thickness.
Systemic health problems, including diabetes, migraine headaches, and poor circulation.
