Pediatric Ophthalmology is concerned with ocular conditions and vision care in infants, children, and adolescents. Strabismus is misalignment of the eyes. Including esotropia, exotropia, or hyper / hypotropia, strabismus is a condition that must be corrected.

Amblyopia or Lazy Eye, is the most common cause of visual impairment in childhood. It may be caused by strabismus as well as by deprivation or refractive error. Screening in children beginning in infancy is of the utmost importance, because early diagnosis offers the best chance for effective treatment of pediatric eye conditions.Our pediatric eye specialists care for children with a full range of eye and vision problems, as well as certain problems related to eye movements in adults.Children having eye problems ranging from refractive errors, squints, cataracts, glaucoma, tumours, allergy etc. are managed at PNK. Special attention is given to children with ‘Lazy Eyes’ (amblyopia) and squints.

Lazy Eye or Amblyopia is the term for poor vision in one or both eyes. It can result from refractive error, squint or several other causes. This needs to be identified and treated at an early age to recover vision. PNK is one of only a few centers giving special attention to the diverse ophthalmic needs of children from infancy through adolescence --- a critical time when clear vision plays an important role in mental, physical, and social development. There is an orthoptics unit within the dept., which caters to patients who have muscle imbalance or weakness. Strabismus surgery is undertaken for squints, which are not correctable with either glasses, or orthoptics exercises Specialized eye care for children has been a major activity of the department with support from a well established paediatric department. Our services range from monitoring visual development in children with systemic compromise to interventional therapy for strabismus, childhood cataract, glaucoma, neurovisual disorders, keratoplasty as also low visual aids for children.
